The Whale Windsock Project
Imagine walking towards your favorite park and seeing what appears to be a fleet of whales and other marine animals in the air. As you get closer, you realize that each marine mammal is actually a uniquely handmade windsock. As you wander around, you overhear students discussing ocean science, conservation, or their experiences making their windsock.
Dive into the Whale Windsock Project! Discover the wonders of our ocean and its incredible marine life, then share your excitement and newfound knowledge on social media by posting a short 3-5sec video. Then, let’s turn your passion for your favorite sea creature into crafting a vibrant windsock, and join us for lively windsock flying events with our growing community of marine animal advocates, by letting our creations soar together in celebration!
This project is about creating a memorable adventure that fuses science and art, blending research and hands-on windsock-making. The project offers a recipe for intergenerational art-making, as well as teaching the younger generation the power of building community voice: while we can show the beauty of working with our hands to make windsocks, the young people can showcase how to share the windsocks on digital platforms. Through playful marine windsocks, we’ll inspire everyone to explore, learn, and take action for the ocean’s future. Our hope is that our participants and their digital communities will feel empowered to make choices daily that help keep our oceans healthy and the incredible creatures that call them home.
The project consists of four main parts:
1. Learning about a marine animal.
2. Creating a 5- to 15-second video presentation of what you learned.
3. Posting your video on social media.
4. Making a windsock representing that animal. Participants will then fly the windsock at various pop-up events and continue to advocate for marine animals by making positive changes in their daily habits that promote ocean health.
